Club Kids´ Easter Egg Baskets   Leave a comment

Saturday, April 23, at the program, the kids worked on their baskets and colored a cut-out Easter egg to paste to the front. There were over 60 children, so we couldn´t help them all, and thus they completed the activity on April 30. Vasti helped the younger kids color an Easter egg and weave a string through it.

We give out a snack at the end of the class.

In order to better invest in the kids and be able to teach classes (music, English, poetry), we plan to continue to teach only arts and crafts until fewer children are attending regularly.

Easter Sunday at Club, Mama Luz taught all the kids together. There were 90 kids!!! Several new kids came plus all the regulars. Mama Luz explained that Jesus died for our sins and rose again. I explained that the Easter egg symbolizes the tomb of Christ and, when cracked, symbolizes His resurrection. The kids colored hard-boiled eggs. Then they ate their eggs with stir-fried rice and vegetables.

April 30, Vasti helped the little ones decorate a name card. We bought a nice wooden table just their size, which you can see that they are enjoying.

Dorian, Karen, Gabriela   Leave a comment

Today we celebrated one of our Club kids´ birthdays. Dorian turned 8 years old. He and his brother Anderson M. are our most faithful Club kids, coming every Sunday and most events, since we began this ministry 3 years ago. Dorian´s sponsor sent us money, so last week, I took him shopping for clothes, shoes, a backpack, and marbles (he chose to share his donation with his brother Anderson). We made him a birthday cake to celebrate his birthday at Club. He´d never had a birthday party, so he was surprised and excited.

Karen received a box of goodies from her sponsor for her 16th birthday; her family hadn´t been able to afford anything for her birthday so this made it a special day for her.

I took Gabriela shopping at the Christian book store; she bought 3 worship CDs and a Bible quiz book that were gifts from her sponsor.

Thanks, Sponsors, for caring for our kids! If you want to be a sponsor, we have many kids who still need to be adopted. We ask that you pray for them regularly and send occasional packages and/or donations (especially for birthday, Christmas, and school). Thank you for blessing this ministry in a direct and special way!

Note: The Christian store has books, CDs, DVDs, shirts, bookmarks, stickers, and Bibles. If you are interested in giving such a gift to your adopted child, send a donation to Wordsower (on a post-it note, put “Rachel Deal” and the name of your adopted child). This is cheaper than sending a gift and the child enjoys the outing.

Saturday Project   2 comments

Yesterday, April 16, we began the Saturday Project, which will take place every Saturday afternoon. 60 children came, and they had a wonderful time.

The schedule is as following:

4-4:15 Devotional

4:15-5:15 Craft. The current craft is a paper Easter basket (Vasti did a heart craft with the youngest kids).

5:15-6 Games. Josue organized a race with eggs balanced on a spoon.

6 Snack. We served vanilla wafers, manderine halves, and juice.

(We will add English, poetry, literature, guitar and keyboard, and computation later on. We are waiting for donations for this project and also to put in the ceiling upstairs—it´s too hot without the ceiling.)

If you would like to contribute toward this project, please make note on a sticky note when you send the check to Wordsower. Always put Rachel Deal, and in addition, put Saturday Project. We need $250/month to cover expenses for the craft, materials, photocopies, and a meal (until we receive our complete budget we will only provide a snack).

Introducing Alberto   Leave a comment

Alberto is 14 years old. He comes from a village 5 days away by boat. A year ago, his parents sent him to Iquitos to work with a friend, with the hopes that he would have a better life than he did in the village. He has been working for the last year. He wanted to study but couldn´t, as he had to work just to pay for room and board. We met him when we built our home, as he lived next door to us. He spent all of his free time with us, either hanging out or helping around the house, and we saw that he takes care of things, is responsible and fun, and wants to go to school. In addition to providing a Christian education, we want to give underprivileged children an opportunity to go to school, leaving the vicious cycle of poverty, in order to have a better life by earning a degree, having a profession, getting a job, and providing for their families.

Daniel, Jonathan, and Alberto worked hard to complete the dorm room and bathrooms upstairs in Block 4. They painted the dormitory. We got the wooden door and window to the dormitory put in, and one for one of the bathrooms (here everything is made by hand, so it´s expensive and slow). We also put in glass plates in the small window to help keep out rain. So now Alberto has a place to stay (see pix in Blog).  A sponsor has agreed to help cover his expenses—for school (which began April 4—he entered 7th grade), food (he eats his meals at Mama Luz´s house), clothes, bus fare to school, and personal needs. We are hopeful that by sowing seeds of love into him—this year and, if it works out, until he graduates high school, he will learn to walk faithfully with God and will have a better life.

His parents came to visit for a few weeks; it was great to meet them. Alberto hadn´t seen them for over a year, so it was good for him to spend some time with them.
